We welcomed a new pig to the sanctuary family yesterday! Meet Stella, aka Stella 2.0, aka Junior, aka May-May. She’s already stolen all of our hearts.

May-May isn’t exactly a “rescue” animal coming from unfortunate circumstances. She was a deeply loved house pig and cherished family member in one of our neighboring communities, but her people recognized she deserved more space and freedom than they could provide. Their decision to prioritize her wellbeing over their own desire for her companionship was incredibly selfless and we admire them for it.

We know we’ve got big shoes to fill, but we’re up for the challenge. Before long, May-May will be grazing the fields alongside her new sanctuary friends.

Current headcount on the farm:
1️⃣6️⃣ pigs
3️⃣ goats
1️⃣ cat
1️⃣ horse
1️⃣ bunny
❔ chickens
…and possibly a skunk living in the shed.

It’s not often our litters can commingle due to age gaps or quarantine reasons but today we wrangled all three litters (25 puppies ‼️) and got them together for a little play date. Safe introduction to other puppies (outside of their litters) at this age is so beneficial to them and their socialization while their brains are little sponges. We were shocked how quickly they were all BFFs. They were more interested in cuddling with their new found friends than anything else.

We hope this is a little serotonin boost for your day! 🐶

Help us help Leo find a home that’s better suited for him. 🐶

We believe in home-to-home adoptions whenever possible to ease the burden on already overstretched rescues and shelters. Leo’s family loves him dearly—he’s had quite a life already—but it’s clear his current environment isn’t working.
Read what his family has to say below, and email them at emilypwheeler@gmail.com to learn more. They’re ready to move mountains to find Leo the perfect home in the Tetons or surrounding region. Let’s use the power of social media to get as many eyes on him as possible! Like, comment, share & save! ❤️

From Leo’s family:
“Leo is a total dreamboat sweetheart. We love him to death. The only issue is he overheats easily, and LA just isn’t the right climate for him. It’s only April and already he can’t go on walks most days. Even with a yard, it’s not the life he deserves. When I took him to Jackson in the winter, he was a totally different, much happier dog. I had a Husky/Shepherd before who got hot easily—but Leo’s heat sensitivity is next level. He gets stressed, cries, and bolts for shade—sometimes unsafely.

We’ve been trying to find him a home in Jackson. He has separation anxiety and doesn’t do well being left alone often. He also can’t be crated or confined—it triggers panic and destructive behavior. His teeth are worn down, possibly from trying to chew out of a cage. He was found as a stray last summer in Bakersfield, CA.

Now, he’s totally fine being left home with our other dogs or in the car. He’s an absolute angel with kids of all ages and loves all people, dogs, and animals. He’s gentle, affectionate (more than our 8-pound Chihuahua!), and his long, soft coat somehow sheds less than hers.

Leo is around three years old, possibly a Samoyed-Malamute mix. He weighs 80 pounds and is healthy. He’s low energy overall but playful and gets the zoomies. He loves hiking in temps under 60°F but doesn’t need much exercise. He’s great on and off leash. He’d do best with someone who’s home a lot—an older person or couple, or a bigger family with kids. He’d likely enjoy having other dogs around to ease his anxiety, but it’s not a must.” ❤️

So many amazing things happening on property and in the community!

🐾 Our Puppy Palaces are full (we currently have 28 canines in our care!) and growing up quickly. Dory and her eight puppies are still in need of rescue placement. Our partnering rescues and shelters are full, and the background logistics and mental load of coordinating these connections is much heavier than it may seem. We’re actively searching for rescues that can take them on — are you affiliated with an organization that might be interested? Reach out!

🤠 Congratulations to Emily Sadow for winning our @perennial.west t-shirt contest, and thank you to everyone who participated by submitting designs and voting for your favorites! Stay tuned for how you can get your hands on one of them!

🐶 Huge thanks to @silverstarcommunications for partially funding a spay/neuter grant through their Community Cares program!

✂️ Thank you as well to @cftetonvalley and an anonymous donor for funding our spay/neuter grant through the Competitive Grants Program!

🧑‍🎓 We’ve been lucky enough to have a @jhcommunityschool student working with us on their senior capstone project. Wade has been an invaluable part of the farm team and today learned all about the importance of vaccines — and how to administer them!

💻 Join us at @poppynetworkjh next week for Cuddles + Coworking! It’s members only, but day passes are available — reach out to them to learn more!

☕️ Mark your calendars for Puppies & Puppicinos at @alpineaircoffee next Thursday!

This Spring has been nothing short of amazing, thanks to the incredible support from our community. We’ve never felt more connected to the people who share in our mission! ❤️

We have news that we want to shout from a mountain top! ❤️

Sam, our incredible Canine Behavior Coordinator, is now officially a CCPT (Certified Professional Dog Trainer) — and we couldn’t be prouder! 🤓 🐶

She’s been working toward this milestone for the past year and passed with flying colors. While we’ve always known she’s one in a million when it comes to training and behavior, this gold-standard certification takes her expertise to the next level.

This means even more tools, knowledge, and compassion going into our work with canines in need and the humans who love them.

👀 Looking for a trainer? Keep in mind: anyone can say they’re a dog trainer—but not everyone backs it up with credentials. Here’s why a CCPT matters:

✔️ Uses proven, humane, science-based methods
✔️ Has real-world, verified experience
✔️ Stays current through continuing education
✔️ Follows a professional code of ethics

It’s like hiring a licensed contractor instead of a DIYer—you want the real deal when it comes to your dog’s behavior and well-being. We offer many different ways to assist individuals, fosters, shelters, rescues and more with canine behavior, head to our website to see how you can get support!

Congrats, Sam! 🐕✨

Lucky and her St. Patrick’s Day litter are officially off to find their forever homes with our friends at @animaladoptioncenterjhwy! Anyone lucky enough to adopt momma or one of her pups will be striking gold.

But Lucky’s story is also a powerful example of the systemic issues we continue to see in animal rescue. From what we were told, she was originally a puppy given away in a parking lot. She was never spayed, didn’t receive vaccines, and four years later — still intact — became pregnant by a family member’s unneutered male dog. She gave birth to 12 puppies, lost 7, and was turned away from a shelter due to an active parvo outbreak. That’s when she came to us.

This is a cycle we’re working hard to break. We neutered the male dog, and Lucky and her surviving pups are now safe, healthy, and on the path to adoption. But this litter is a sobering reminder of how preventable this all could’ve been. Here are just a few takeaways from their story:

🐶 Giving away unaltered puppies may seem harmless, but it can have a ripple effect — for Lucky, it led to more unplanned litters years later.
🐶 If unspayed females and unneutered males live together, puppies shouldn’t come as a surprise.
🐶 Our hearts hurt for the 7 puppies that didn’t survive — they should never have had to go through this.
🐶 Spay/neuter resources are available — and preventing a litter is far more affordable and humane than raising one.

In just 43 days, this litter received 28 vaccines, 6 microchips, and 6 spay/neuter surgeries. Today, we send them off with love and hope as they begin their next chapter.

Let’s keep working toward a world where every dog has a safe, wanted, and in a loving home before welcoming more homeless puppies into the system. ❤️
