Parvo (or the P-word) is like nails on a chalkboard for those in animal rescue. Canine parvovirus (CPV or parvo) is a highly contagious viral disease of dogs that commonly causes acute gastrointestinal illness in puppies. The disease most often strikes in pups between six and 20 weeks old (hint: the population we serve). CPV is relentless, stubborn, mysterious, deadly, and a pain in everyone’s a$$. Speaking of money, it’s not cheap to handle either. 😂

This past December, we experienced our first CPV litter. Patient zero was impossible to track down, and having parvo in the dead of winter with the setup of Puppy Palaces was not ideal. Thanks to Victor Vet and their guidance, almost the entire litter pulled through and found happy homes through @idahohumanesociety. RIP Cassidy and Bonnie, who we lost to this ugly disease but are now frolicking over the bridge. We’re sorry you were brought into this world unwanted and had to leave so soon due to a disease directly correlated to the current state of animal welfare.

Long story short, Puppy Palace #3 has been sitting barren ever since, patiently waiting for the snow to melt and for us to mitigate it. While we waited on the edge of our seats, we did our due diligence and got up to speed on the best protocols with @uwmadison (thank you to everyone who donated to our upgraded vaccine protocols), and we put a plan in place for the Spring.

On Wednesday, we spent 7 hours spraying RESCUE disinfectant while dump trucks and excavators laid a fresh start for us with sand and gravel. We are looking forward to safely reopening the doors—a new beginning.

These costs were unplanned but non-negotiable. The dirt and labor costs $2,500, and a 55-gallon barrel of RESCUE costs $1,553. We will need to spend an additional $500 restocking supplies to get it up and running again. You always show up for us when we need, so here we are asking for help to make sure we do this right and it doesn’t break our budget. Mark your calendars. Rain or shine we are bidding our official farewell to Winter and prepping the farm for the summer season. Bring a friend a friend, bring your favorite farm tool (rake, shovel, pitchfork, etc.) and volunteer for the day. Snacks, chores, animal time, and so much more. A glimpse into the @animaladoptioncenterjhwy Spay/Neuter Clinic. Our team has spent the weekend volunteering to provide spay/neuter services free to tribal members on the Wind River Reservation (WRR). The WRR spans millions of acres and has no animal control or access to vet care that is affordable. The pet overpopulation problem is severe and many of our Puppy Palace residents come from this area. We hope these efforts not only enhance the lives of the tribal pets being served and their families but decrease the amount of unwanted litters that are entering the shelter system.

Six out today and seven in today. Meet Anna Wintour and her Met Gala puppies who arrived today thanks to @kellyjane511 transporting during a spring snow storm!

We had plans to get these guys this weekend during the spay/neuter clinic and figured why not get them settled in a warm Puppy Palace early since one just opened up. We DON’T like to waste time and we DO like to maximize Puppy Palace square footage! This litter of six & their mom will be available for adoption through @animaladoptioncenterjhwy in about seven weeks! We can’t wait to get to know them and share their journey with you. ❤️‍🔥

Our team is gearing up to join the @animaladoptioncenterjhwy Spay/Neuter Clinic on the Wind River Reservation this weekend, and we can’t stop thinking about the importance of spay/neuter within our world. Not only do we have a line of partners needing assistance with unwanted puppies, but we’ve also seen mama dogs get pregnant within the shelter system recently. Accidental litters continue to rise, and shelters are faced with terrible decisions to either euthanize for space or double up kennels with intact animals. This problem is only getting exponentially worse.

Since we are in constant communication with a variety of shelters and rescues, we’ve learned that access to spay/neuter hinders partners from taking on litters even if they have the capacity. Hindrances include the nationwide veterinarian shortage and limited funding for spay/neuter surgeries. Here’s an example: one of our partner shelters in Idaho is backed up with 60 spay/neuter appointments. To make more room, they’re adopting animals without spay/neuter and having people put deposits down to reserve a future surgical appointment. While the adoption numbers are great, unfortunately, this leaves a lot of room for human error, and many animals never receive their surgery. According to the Humane Society of the United States, one unspayed dog and her offspring are capable of producing over 11,000 puppies per year. With every animal that moves through our program, we try to ‘close the loop’ on that animal’s shelter experience, meaning we do our best to make sure they don’t end up in a shelter in the future.

The shelter systems are overwhelmed, and spay/neuter is the only way to get to the root of the problem. Our goal this spring is to raise $20,000 for an AAF Spay/Neuter Program to increase the number of animals we can send to our partners already spayed/neutered. Today, our team welcomed a litter of puppies from @bestfriendsanimalsociety to the farm.
